My role as a member of Pattison’s creative department has allowed me the opportunity to works with hundreds of companies on display from coast to coast, while teaming up with a tight-knit group of like-minded creatives right here in Winnipeg. My role as Precision Chemical’s Graphic Designer and Social Media Content Creator has not only given me the opportunity to create new print and digital assets for the company, but also take on the role of social media content creator and manager. The marketing materials follow a pre-existing brand guide to ensure regularity with all other documents created with the purpose of informing potential clients about Precision Chemical and the products offered. However, these assets also consist of custom layouts and graphics to display innovative design solutions while effectively demonstrating the corporate design standard. As the company’s content creator, I have developed and designed a cross-channel social media strategy to audiences across Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn to increase our online presence to both local and international clientele. This show acts as a platform in which graduating students of the honours program are able to showcase their project(s) that they have worked to develop and execute throughout the two terms. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty chose to develop an online platform that would still allow students to display their artwork. This website was a collaborative effort between four students, enrolled in fine arts, computer science and music, respectively. As one of the two designers, we worked to create unique branding elements as well as standards of use for these elements including typography, colour, images and graphics. Our goal was to determine a way to best represent this particular group of students, but also the unique limitations and overall unpredictable nature that we were faced within during our final year of post-secondary. To assist in the promotion of the BFA Exhibition website, I was tasked to create images and graphics to be used on social media and email lists. At the time in which these images were presented, the site had not yet launched, so I wanted to provide subtle hints regarding the visual language of the site mainly the iconographic elements and grid-like features. On the website, these elements are actually SVG images and morph into new shapes upon hovering with a cursor, I chose to take that idea of unpredictability and irregular motion and apply throughout the image to truly contrast the rigid nature of the grid when untouched by the user. For this project, my work has grown to become an exploration of the performative qualities embedded within digital platforms and how they influence individual navigational experiences. I have also chosen to represent the ways in which physical, printed materials are able to act as an extension of the digital platform. The poster forms work to be a representation of the visual language that frequently appears throughout the platforms. Through the use of scale and bold visuals, they serve as a reflection of a digital space within the world, but are able to grant you an understanding of the way in which the digital space I have created. The instruction manuals works to bridge the poster forms to the webpage. The manual is a more-direct reference to the imagery and visual language of the website and is paired with step-by-step instructions to assist in grasping the ways in which the user should handle the pages they encounter. In 2021, I had the opportunity to design the IPAC Annual Report that would assist in the direction of their annual conference the following year; for the third year in a row. As materials were selected from members of the association, I began to research potential layouts to pursue that followed the requests of IPAC’s administrative team. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s conference would unfortunately have to take place on a virtual platform rather than in-person. I chose to represent the “new normal” and the health and safety measures through imagery. Through the lack of uniformity and addition of abstracted letter forms, Flux Helvetica was designed in such a way that it lacks neutrality and it’s typically default-nature. The jarring contrast and fluidity incorporated here is to contradict the concept of the traditional Helvetica letter forms existing in a locked-in space. By rejecting these ideals, Helvetica Flux works to break away from the principles of modernity to become a dynamic representation of typography as a medium.
