A tradition at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, is the annual Honours BFA Graduation Exhibition. This show acts as a platform in which graduating students of the honours program are able to showcase their project(s) that they have worked to develop and execute throughout the two terms. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty chose to develop an online platform that would still allow students to display their artwork.
This website was a collaborative effort between four students, enrolled in fine arts, computer science and music, respectively. As one of the two designers, we worked to create unique branding elements as well as standards of use for these elements including typography, colour, images and graphics. Our goal was to determine a way to best represent this particular group of students, but also the unique limitations and overall unpredictable nature that we were faced within during our final year of post-secondary.
To assist in the promotion of the BFA Exhibition website, I was tasked to create images and graphics to be used on social media and email lists. At the time in which these images were presented, the site had not yet launched, so I wanted to provide subtle hints regarding the visual language of the site mainly the iconographic elements and grid-like features.
On the website, these elements are actually SVG images and morph into new shapes upon hovering with a cursor, I chose to take that idea of unpredictability and irregular motion and apply throughout the image to truly contrast the rigid nature of the grid when untouched by the user.
