As a part of the curriculum of my fourth year at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, we were assigned to design a new weight of Helvetica that could go beyond the ideas of universality and neutrality typically associated with the typeface.
Through the lack of uniformity and addition of abstracted letter forms, Flux Helvetica was designed in such a way that it lacks neutrality and it’s typically default-nature. The jarring contrast and fluidity incorporated here is to contradict the concept of the traditional Helvetica letter forms existing in a locked-in space. By rejecting these ideals, Helvetica Flux works to break away from the principles of modernity to become a dynamic representation of typography as a medium.
